Sheffield Select Board Approves $18,500 Assessment Contract Over Assessors' Objections

SHEFFIELD — June 15, 2026 — Sheffield Select Board approves $18,500 cyclical property inspection contract over Board of Assessors' objections. The board voted unanimously Monday to expand a contract with assessor SCK for 75 additional cyclical property inspections, which state law requires municipalities to conduct on every property within a 10-year cycle. Board of Assessors chair Lou Levine and member Robert Fire appeared at the meeting to say they had not been informed the item was on the agenda and had not reviewed the proposal, with Levine calling it "strange that this item came to your board without our being informed." The Select Board declined to defer, with one member saying, "I see no reason to delay something that's inevitable that we need to do by state law." The board also approved a $6,000 appraisal contract with Crowley Associates for Kelsey Road Bridge easements, unanimously authorized an agreement with the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission for a comprehensive plan at a town cost of $5,000, and declined to adopt a state option allowing alcohol sales until 3 a.m.
