Sheffield Select Board Enters Executive Session Over Cannabis Host Community Funds Dispute

SHEFFIELD -- February 2, 2026, Sheffield Select Board closes public meeting to discuss cannabis host community funds litigation. The board voted February 2 to enter executive session, not to return to open session, to discuss litigation strategy related to host community funds involving Theory of Wellness, a cannabis operator, citing potential harm to the town's negotiating position if the matter were aired publicly. In other business, the board unanimously appointed Robert Meyer to the Board of Assessors, creating a corresponding vacancy on the Board of Health that the town is actively seeking to fill. Senior Center Director Kathy Loring reported the center served 17,781 individuals in 2025 with an average daily attendance of 52, supported by 40 volunteers who donated more than 3,413 hours. Rick Paul, a retired paper-industry executive with 40 years of experience, was introduced as a candidate for the volunteer recycling coordinator position, with a formal appointment vote deferred to the next meeting. The board also announced the Sheffield Police Department has temporarily relocated to the Classical Light building while mold remediation proceeds at its regular facility, a process expected to take up to two months.
