School committee votes to start FY27 budget from zero

School Committee · Meeting of April 9, 2026

SHEFFIELD — Southern Berkshire schools vote to rebuild FY27 budget from a level-funded clean slate. The School Committee, working with consultant TJ of Open Architects, will start next year's budget with fixed costs like salaries, health insurance and transportation, then add back requests with committee oversight. Superintendent Dr.

Rickett said three of the district's five towns, including Sheffield, have agreed to move to a special June budget vote, calling it "the gift of time." Members also approved a $4,158.08 transfer to fix an overspent ESSER grant account, adopted the 2026-27 school calendar 6-0-1, and switched to biweekly public budget updates after public commenters criticized board tension and slow contract talks.
