Southern Berkshire panel appoints Matthew Myers business administrator

School Committee · Meeting of May 14, 2026

SHEFFIELD — Southern Berkshire school panel has five days to close a $1.2 million budget gap. The committee appointed Matthew Myers as school business administrator, pending contract talks, after an 8-0 executive session vote to discuss negotiating strategy. Consultant TJ LaPlante of Open Architects said salaries are rising just 2 percent, to $10.7 million, but one-time offsets fell from $1.8 million to $610,000 because grants like IDEA and Title I can't be counted on at prior levels.

A district finance official called the compressed timeline "not ideal." Sheffield resident Amy Murray, during public comment, said the March budget was "not worth two months and a special town meeting" that already cost the town once. Adoption is tentatively set for June 3. Separately, the South Berkshire Community Health Coalition reported 74 percent of surveyed students have experienced bullying, and senior Ben Vela won a statewide leadership award.
